That voiceover at the beginning of American Beauty is really beautiful at the beginning and then he's says something about "I died today" which draws you in. I'm not a huge fan of the movie but I think it has a fantastic monolouge and it's repeated at the end too.

What are some gripping opening lines from films or books, and why do you think they work so well?
